Mud, Friends, Trails

Sunday morning I ran Wade's Big Adventure, an 8 or 18 mile trail race in Memphis. I've been running trails with Kristy and some other friends once a week for the past couple of months, so I was excited to do my first trail race.

I'll get through the bad news first...I had every intention of running the 18-miler and using it for this weekend's long run. But between getting sick in Mexico last weekend (and still having stomach issues) and taking these pills for my skin (only 3 more days of pills. Thank goodness), I'm just drained of energy and not feeling well. So, I opted to do the 8-miler instead.

The good news is that I ran it with two friends, and we had an absolute blast! We started at the back of the pack (rookie mistake for a trail race), so the first mile or two was super crowded. We even had to walk at certain parts. But it began to thin out, and by the time we got to the turnaround at mile 4, we were keeping a pretty good pace. And then we picked it up on the way back.

I run trails a lot slower than the road. Hopefully the more I'm out there, the quicker I'll get.

The three of us finished 42nd, 43rd, and 44th. I think if we hadn't started so far back, we would have finished earlier in the pack. But whatev. We were just out there having fun.

Wade's is a super low key race. There's no timing, no "packets," no bibs...just a bunch of people running through the woods. We each got a rock at the turnaround that we had to carry to the finish to prove we went all the way to the halfway point. And Wade had chili waiting at the finish. So if that seems like your thing, check it out next year. You'll definitely see me there because I had a blast this year.

On a somewhat unrelated note, being sick + these meds have set training back for the marathon. I'm going to try to crank out a 13-miler tomorrow and see how it goes. If I'm not feeling it, I'm just going to go ahead and commit do doing the St. Jude Half instead of the full. No use in overdoing it and making myself feel worse. There's always next year. I'll keep you posted :)

Congrats that's a great accomplishment! I've been in training mode for my first ever half marathon! But recently I've had an eye infection and completed a 22 mile hike that left several blisters on my feet so my training has been postponed :( I used to live in Memphis though so it sounds like there was a good turn out! Great job! Xoxo

Love this! I think if I ever did a race, I would rock at the off-road, since that's where I do all of my running and walking. The road I go on is all dirt, and has lots of hills!

I love that you have to a carry a rock back with you! That's such a fun way to race. I'm glad you were smart and only did 8 miles instead of 18 since you weren't feeling 100%. Hopefully you'll be feeling a lot better soon!

Trail runs are my favorite, I didn't even think about looking up trail races - I assumed all were roads. I have got to check for some in the DC area!!
