I worked a 5K race over the weekend (and dragged the husband along to help me), so we decided to run it.
Since I'm going for the big sub 2 half now, I've been trying to do more speed work lately. There's nothing scientific about how I do "speed work." But, I'm trying to pick up my pace and do some tempo runs here and there. And as much as I hate the dreadmill, it's beginning to be my go-to tool to use for "speed training." Actually, earlier in the day before this particular 5K, I did a 4-mile speed workout on the treadmill that kicked my butt. I guess it paid off because I PR'ed again that night at the race!
The race was held in downtown Memphis. It was completely flat with lots of turns. And the weather was GORGEOUS. I was hoping for anything better than 28:02, my best time so far. Heck, I would have been thrilled with a 28:01.
(Side bar: I went back to my spandex/biking-type/I-look-like-a-sausage shorts instead of the tempo or split tempo-ish shorts like I wore here...and hated. I can't deal with shorts riding up or my legs rubbing together {TMI?}. But these puppies are so comfy. They don't move. They fit perfectly. And I don't care how ridiculous they look, I'm never venturing away from them again.)
Well, the husband and I started off together, but I told him to go and run his own race. The man never trains, but he's apparently just naturally athletic and can pull a race out of nowhere. So he left me in his dust.
Anyway, my splits are below:
8:46
8:41
8:36
Do you know how incredible it is to see those numbers!? Not too long ago I was running about a 10 min/mile. I've shaved off quite a bit of time in a short period!
Another random side note, you may remember my philosophy of finishing strong (mainly because husband told me everyone sees how you finish, but not how you run the race), so as soon as I hit 3 miles, I picked it up into high gear. Someone even shouted out, "Way to sprint to the end! Go Fleet Feet!" I have to admit, it put a smile on my face.
When I finished, my Garmin said 3.16 miles in 27:13, and my official time was 27:14, average pace 8:47. So, so thrilled with that!
And BTW, the husband ran a 25:35. I mean, really?

This was definitely a great boost of confidence for the half next month!

Very proud of you!! Great job, friend!
Congrats! That's an amazing time!
I think the shorts give you some definition to your legs! You definitely do not look like a sausage! :)
You're awesome!
I'm training for my first 10k in PHX and can't decide what to wear.
It's in May so it'll already be 100 degrees by then but it's at 7AM so it'll be the 90's.
Suggestions?
I have thunder thighs and am not a fan of spandex BUT I just might have to suck it up.
P.S.-- are you guys so sad Tebow was traded?? I cried. Literally. At least we have a class act like Manning though, eh??

Way to go, Christin!! As a 10 minute mile girl myself, you give me hope that I'll be able to get down into the 8's one day! My fastest 5K pace has been 9:30...so far! :)

Awesome job!
YAY! Speedwork does pay off and way to finish strong. I always sprint at the end too, mainly because I think in my head, it's almost over! haha. :) You'll do great at the half, and your speedwork will just help you in the long term! :)
